Flintridge Bookstore hosts special events for SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, including author meet and greets and book signings, storytimes, and guest artists. Small Business Saturday is a nationwide celebration started in 2010 to recognize the contributions indie businesses make to the communities they serve. This year Flintridge Bookstore features nine authors working in various genres and for readers of all ages. Three featured local artists also offer beautiful handmade pieces. Plus, there are store give-aways, a drawing to win a bag of books, a Find the Niffler! contest, a children’s activity table, and more. Come, join the fun, and show your support! SHOP SMALL! Here is the line-up for the day: ARTISTS: 10:30 AM-3:30 PM KEREN OR HANDMADE CERAMICS by Yvette Lee Lee has been working with clay for almost two decades in her home studio in Los Angeles. Her pieces are handbuilt or wheel-thrown and glazed. WATERCOLORS & SKETCHES by Dilmit Singh Singh is a self-taught artist who strives to capture light, shade and shadow in her natural surroundings. She paints in both oil and watercolors and currently teaches at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. LITTLE MUSE JEWELRY DESIGNS by Anthe Wosczyna - Wosczyna creates beadwoven jewelry by stitching together Japanese and Czech glass seed beads from a wide color palette into intricate mandala patterns. AUTHOR MEET & GREETS/BOOK SIGNINGS/STORYTIMES: 11:00 AM-1:00 PM Nikki Grimes, Lullaby for a King (Picture Book) - With glittering poetry and stunning watercolor artwork, this book ushers readers into the awe and wonder of the Christmas story (ages 3-7). Nikki Grimes is a New York Times bestselling author and the recipient of multiple awards. 12:15 PM STORYTIME. Mitali Perkins, Holy Night and Little Star (Picture Book) – A luminous retelling of the Christmas story with the message about the true gifts of Christmas and Jesus’ mission of salvation (ages 3-7). Perkins, who has won numerous awards, was born in India, and has lived around the world. She currently resides in the San Francisco Bay area. 11:30 AM STORYTIME. Bianca Schwarz, The Innkeeper’s Daughter and other titles from The Gentleman Spy Mystery series (Historical Romance) – Emily March, illegitimate daughter of Sir Henry March, begins a romance with Max Warthon, the grandson of the sinister Earl of Warthon, enemy of Sir Henry. The romance raises the ire of the Earl and leads to certain peril. Schwarz, a lifelong storyteller, was born in Germany, moved to London, and now lives in Los Angeles. Judith Teitelman, Guesthouse for Ganesha (Fiction) - In 1923, a 17-year-old girl arrives in Köln “with a hardened heart as her sole luggage.” Thus begins her 22-year journey, narrated by the elephant-headed Hindu God Ganesha, in search of a place of sanctuary, against the backdrops of the European Holocaust and the Hindu Kali Yuga (“Age of Darkness). Teitelman is a consultant and educator in Los Angeles in the nonprofit cultural sector. Noon - 2:00 PM Donn Swaby, It’ll Be Irie: Staying True to Yourself (Picture Book) - Raymond can’t wait to move to America. But when he gets to his new school, his Jamaican roots show through and he must figure out how to be true to himself (ages 5-7). Swaby has written for stage, screen, and print. He wrote and starred in the feature film, "Buds for Life". 1:00 PM STORYTIME. 1:00 – 3:00 PM Vanessa Cudmore, Lotta Pedal Catches Her Wave (Chapter Book) - Lotta Pedal tackles a surf adventure and sets off to protect the natural environment around her (ages 6-9). Cudmore is a graduate of Queen’s University in Film Studies and has had a successful career in advertising. 2:30 PM STORYTIME. Verity Rudzinski, The Cryptid Beneath My House (Middle Grade Book) - 12 year olds Anthony and Livia have special powers – flying like an eagle, running like a cheetah, smelling like a blood hound. Together, they visit a hidden world inhabited by others like them – some kind, some not (ages 8-14). Rudzinski has published her clinical work in the field of food misuse. She lives in Los Angeles.1:45 PM STORYTIME. 1:30-3:30 PM Ann Bernath & Richard Doyle, contributors to Inner Space & Outer Thoughts: Speculative Fiction from Caltech and JPL Authors from TechLit - Experts at the frontiers of their fields present stories about alien astrobiologists, AI parenthood, a quest to preserve our histories beyond the heat death of our universe, and much more. TechLit is the creative writing club of the Caltech and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) community. Mary Otis, Burst (Fiction) – A debut novel exploring the relationships between mothers and daughters, the desire to escape, and the longing to connect. This is a story about how we become—and unbecome—our mothers, how we absorb the past, and how we burst into our own futures. Otis has received an Honorable Mention for the Pushcart Prize, had a Distinguished Story of the Year in Best American Short Stories, and received a Getty Foundation Scholarship. She has taught fiction writing at UCLA and UC Riverside.
